Firework experiment

Today, after learning about how to stay safe on bonfire night, we made our own fireworks in a bowl!

We used food colouring, vegetable oil and water for this experiment. We added drops of food colouring to the oil. We then poured this mixture into a bowl of water.

The science bit!

Food colouring doesn’t dissolve in oil but it does in water. Oil is less dense than water so it will not mix with it. The food colouring droplets will sink out of the oil because they are heavier and once they hit the water they will dissolve and will look like tiny fireworks.
